HPL Annual Conference: Education for a New World | Tuesday 29th June, 2021

We are really pleased to announce that the 2nd HPL Annual Conference will be taking place, in person, at Warwick University on the 29th June 2021.

Entitled ‘Education for a New World’, we are delighted to be reconvening to share a day of talks, discussions and workshops about High Performance Learning as well as hearing from Professor Deborah Eyre and welcoming some students from HPL schools.

The conference is to be organised with social distancing plans in place. The conference centre is set in attractive spacious grounds with lots of opportunities to talk and network in the fresh air too.

The Day Conference will be preceded by our Conference Dinner on the evening of the 28th June, where we will be presenting schools with their World Class School Awards.

Being an Effective HPL Lead | Wednesday21st April | 9 am - 4 pm (UK Time) 

This full-day course is aimed at HPL Leads in a school that is working on, or about to undertake, an accredited HPL programme. It is designed to ensure that the HPL Lead can be effective in their role and make the most of the support available to the school.

Through a combination of presentations, activities and facilitated discussions, the day will take HPL Leads through the key aspects of effective implementation of HPL and help them to plan for successful accreditation.

Use Your Brain: An introduction to some key concepts in neuroscience and learning | Wednesday 28th April | 9 am-12 pm (UK Time)

This course explores some of the recent thinking around neuro-science that can be used to inform how we work in classrooms in an HPL school. What we know about building brains. The course will look at a different phase of our development and key factors related to them and also at some significant and emergent themes around learning. It will also introduce some of the key thinkers to track and follow. We will then consider practical implications for classrooms and also explore the question of how much we communicate this new knowledge to students and parents and in what forms.

Learning Support in an HPL School | Tuesday 4th May | 9 am - 12 pm (UK Time)

This half-day course is aimed at classroom support assistants in an HPL school. Through a combination of presentations, activities and facilitated discussions, it will:

  • Explain the HPL philosophy and framework, showing how it is used by teachers and how it helps pupils to systematically improve both confidence and performance.
  • Explore the issues of language, challenge and opportunity and how these impact on performance as well as self-esteem.
  • Encourage participants to reflect on their own classroom practice and at how they both promote and model high expectations.

Normalising High Performance in the classroom | Tuesday 11th May | 9 am-4 pm (UK Time)

This full-day course is aimed at subject leaders and heads of department working in an HPL school. It is designed to:

  • Support those newly promoted to subject leadership in an HPL school to understand the cultural change needed and how to lead it 
  • Support experienced subject leaders in an HPL school to reflect on their leadership of high performance and how to optimise it in classrooms.

Through a combination of presentations, activities and facilitated discussions, the day will:

  • Clarify the conditions and behaviours that teachers need to establish in their classrooms to normalise high performance and 
  • Support middle leaders to establish practical and deliverable plans for moving their own practice and that of their team into the high performance space.

Teaching students how to think and plan | Wednesday 19th May | 8.30 am - 11.30 am (UK Time)

This session will begin to unpick the Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristic (ACP) area of Meta-thinking. Within the meta-thinking area there four skills – meta-cognition, self-regulation, strategy planning and intellectual confidence and this session will look to focus on meta-cognition and strategy planning

The course will identify how teachers can develop knowledge and skills in both areas within their pupils.

An Introduction to Middle Leadership in a Fellowship School | Tuesday 25th May | 8.30 am -11.30 am (UK Time)

Designed for middle leaders in Fellowship of World Class Schools, this session will encourage reflection and the development of professional learning communities. The course is grouped into the following:  

  • Myself as a Middle Leader - Firstly, the course will encourage the participants to reflect on themselves as leaders and how they lead. This will allow the participants to become more aware of their leadership style and how they can deal with different leadership challenges.   
  • Leading Teams – What does leading a team in an HPL Fellowship School look like? The participants on the course will get a wider understanding of leading within an HPL Fellowship School. Key to this will be having a thorough understanding of Professional Learning Communities and what this might look like within your department or year group moving forward. 
  • Leading Learning – What does learning look like in an HPL Fellowship School? The course will identify what learning looks like in High Performance Learning, and how do we recognise this. Participants will leave the course being able to review their departments and know how to work with your teams to make incremental changes to ensure HPL is truly embedded in your department or year group.

New Teacher in an HPL School | Saturday 12th June | 9 am - 1.00 pm (UK Time)

This half-day course is aimed at teachers who have recently joined or will be joining an HPL school. Through a combination of presentations, and facilitated discussions, it will:

  • Introduce teachers to the HPL philosophy and framework, its evidence base and its potential impact in the classroom. 
  • Help teachers new to HPL  get to grips with the ACPs and VAAs and how they can be incorporated into their classroom practice
  • Encourage teachers to consider how to enhance their existing practice by systematically building cognition.  
  • Explore what it feels like to teach in an HPL school by hearing from the HPL Lead in a successful HPL school.

Agile VAAs - Fostering the desire to learn | Monday 14th June | 9 am -12 pm (UK Time)

This course will explore the four attitudes that comprise the Agile VAAs and relate to the desire to learn. These competencies promote the deliberate practice of dispositions that enable students to become more autonomous and prepare to maximise their own learning on the journey to high performance. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on:  the nature of challenge, encouraging enquiry and curiosity to move beyond ‘learned helplessness’, facilitating experimentation with different ideas and risk-taking, and motivating students to be open-minded and creative in developing their own ideas and solutions.

The Coaching Leader | Wednesday 30th June | 9 am – 12 pm (UK Time)

Coaching is an important leadership approach because it focuses on getting the best out of people by unlocking and unleashing their potential. In an educational context, coaching is about developing people so that they are empowered to solve problems and navigate their way through challenge.

At an organisational level, coaching is pivotal to continuous and sustainable improvement and it is a cornerstone of HPL philosophy and practice. This short course will equip school leaders at all levels to develop the beliefs, knowledge, skills and understanding to be a highly effective coaching leader.

Leaders of their own learning: Teaching students to self-regulate| Friday 9th July | 9 am – 12 pm (UK Time)

In this course, you will build upon your current understanding of the ACP of Self-Regulation and its importance in transforming students' progress and outcomes, whilst becoming familiar with the supporting research. 

During this facilitated course, you will explore and share various Self-Regulation approaches that can be adopted in the classroom. As a result, this will allow you to maximise the opportunities that exist in your lessons, making explicit to students the importance of Self-Regulation and ultimately equipping them to become consciously competent in utilising this ACP to become leaders of their own learning.
